DISTINGUISHED AUSTIN PANELISTS

Erin Nelson has been a Chief Marketing Officer for the prior 10+ years across a range of industries: $60B Fortune 50 tech giant Dell, high-growth software startup Bazaarvoice pre- and post-IPO and multi-billion dollar global solar energy company SunPower.

Previously, Nelson was EVP and CMO of SunPower, a global renewable energy company; she earlier was CMO at Bazaarvoice, the leading platform for social engagement for the world’s best brands, where she was one of the core executives who brought the company public in 2012. Erin served as CMO for Dell, where she led the Dell.com business (~$13B P&L), brand, communications, media, agency and corporate social responsibility, and led talent strategy for Dell’s 4K marketers worldwide.

Prior to becoming CMO, Nelson spent three years in Europe as GM of the EMEA Dell.com business ($3B revenue), then as VP of Marketing for Europe, Middle East, and Africa. Before her expat roles, she led a sales organization in the Public sector ($1.4B in revenues) and led the Consumer marketing growth strategy, which drove the business from No. 4 to No. 1 market share in two years.

Nelson began her career in brand management at Procter & Gamble, consulted to some of the world’s biggest brands while at A.T. Kearney, and drove corporate strategy at PepsiCo.

Nelson serves as a director for CSDC, an advisor to venture-backed social startup Rivet, and an advisor to the Dean’s Council at her alma mater, The University of Texas McCombs School of Business.

Mark Shen was named president of St. Louis Children’s Hospital in November 2018. Prior to this role, Shen has served Ascension Health since 2007 in multiple leadership roles, including President, Dell Children’s Medical Center/Dell Children’s Health from 2013 to 2017.

In his role as president of Dell Children’s Medical Center/Dell Children’s Health, Shen led the strategic, clinical and operational integration across the pediatric enterprise and oversaw philanthropic, brand, academic and advocacy priorities for pediatrics across Ascension Texas.

In 2017, Shen was asked to serve as Chief Executive Officer for the Ascension Texas Accountable Care Network and as Senior Vice President of Network Development at Ascension Texas. Shen initiated and developed statewide partnership and acquisition opportunities across the pediatric and adult delivery systems, and has built a clinically integrated network of more than 2,600 providers covering 170,000 lives in risk-based contracts across Medicare and commercial payers in central Texas. Shen also served as the Interim Chair of Pediatrics at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas.

Shen holds a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University; a medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, and a master’s degree in business administration from McCombs School of Business.

Mine Kuban Yücel is senior vice president and senior research advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. She joined the Bank in 1989 and has previously served as director of research, head of the micro/regional/energy group and director of publications. She is an expert on regional and energy issues and has published numerous articles on energy and regional growth.

Yücel is president of the National Association for Business Economics. She serves on the board of the Global Interdependence Center, and the University of Texas at Dallas Energy Board. She was president of the International Association of Energy Economics (IAEE) in 2011 and president of the United States Association of Energy Economics (USAEE) in 2005. She has served on the executive boards of these two organizations, as well as Executive Women of Dallas, Dallas Area Business Economists, the Dallas Chapter of Women in Technology International, Inc. and the Greater Dallas Chamber’s Board of Economists. She received the USAEE Senior Fellow Award in 2007, the Energy Journal Best Paper Award in 2009 and the Outstanding Contributions to the IAEE Award in 2015.

Before joining the Bank, Yücel was an assistant professor of economics at Louisiana State University. She has a BS and MS in mathematics from Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, and a Ph.D. in economics from Rice University in Houston.

D. Eric Hirst is the senior associate dean, professor, and researcher in the areas of financial accounting, financial statement analysis, investor and security analyst judgment and decision making. He has studied management earnings forecasts, disclosure requirements, investor judgment relative to forecasts, and the various aspects of auditing.

Hirst is the King Ranch Chair for Business Leadership and the John Arch White Professor in Business in the department of accounting, and is the associate dean of graduate programs at the McCombs School, The University of Texas at Austin. He has been a visiting professor at schools around the world, including France and Finland. He leads the strategy and operations of six Texas MBA programs serving over 1,200 MBA students.

Hirst is on the board of directors of the MBA Roundtable, is the treasurer for Partners in International Management (PIM), and is an associate editor and on the editorial review boards at numerous top accounting journals.

He is the co-author of Cases in Financial Reporting: An Integrated Approach with an Emphasis on Earnings Quality and Persistence, now in its eighth edition. His research has been acknowledged for excellence, including the American Accounting Association (AAA) Distinguished Contribution to the Accounting Literature Award in 2011. He was an AAA doctoral consortium fellow in 1989.
