DISTINGUISHED DALLAS PANELISTS

Robert Steven Kaplan has served as the thirteenth president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas since September 8, 2015. He represents the Eleventh Federal Reserve District on the Federal Open Market Committee in the formulation of U.S. monetary policy and oversees the 1,200 employees of the Dallas Fed.

Kaplan was previously the Martin Marshall Professor of Management Practice and a Senior Associate Dean at Harvard Business School.

He is the author of several books, including What You Really Need to Lead: The Power of Thinking and Acting Like an Owner; What You’re Really Meant To Do: A Road Map for Reaching Your Unique Potential; and What to Ask the Person in the Mirror: Critical Questions for Becoming a More Effective Leader and Reaching Your Potential.

Prior to joining Harvard in 2006, Kaplan was vice chairman of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. with global responsibility for the firm’s Investment Banking and Investment Management Divisions. Previously, he served as global co-head of the Investment Banking Division. He was also a member of the firm’s Management Committee and served as co-chairman of the firm’s Partnership Committee and chairman of the Goldman Sachs Pine Street Leadership Program.

During his 23-year career at Goldman Sachs, Kaplan served in various other capacities, including head of the Corporate Finance Department, head of Asia-Pacific Investment Banking as well as head of the high-yield department in Investment Banking. He became a partner in 1990. Upon joining Harvard in 2006, Kaplan became a senior director of the firm.

He serves as chairman of Project A.L.S. and co-chairman of the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation, a global venture philanthropy firm that invests in developing non-profit enterprises dedicated to addressing social issues. He is also a board member of Harvard Medical School.

Kaplan previously served on the boards of State Street Corporation, Harvard Management Company, Bed Bath & Beyond and Heidrick & Struggles International, Inc. He was also a trustee of the Ford Foundation, co-founding board chair of the TEAK Fellowship, co-founder and chairman of Indaba Capital Management, LP and chairman of the Investment Advisory Committee at Google, Inc.

Kaplan was appointed by the Governor of Kansas as a member of the Kansas Health Policy Authority Board.

Born and raised in Prairie Village, Kansas, Kaplan received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School.

Bob Metcalfe has been an Internet pioneer since 1970 at MIT, Harvard, Xerox Parc, Stanford, and 3Com. In 1973, Metcalfe invented Ethernet, the standard plumbing of the Internet, at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC).

In 1979, Metcalfe founded billion-dollar Internet startup 3Com, which went public in 1984 and after 30 years joined HP in 2010. Since 2011, Bob is Professor of Innovation and Murchison Fellow of Free Enterprise in the Cockrell School of Engineering, and Professor of Entrepreneurship at the McCombs School of Business, at The University of Texas at Austin.

Metcalfe is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, is a recipient of the National Medal of Technology, and serves on the Board of The Academy of Medicine, Engineering, and Science of Texas (TAMEST).

James T. Hackett is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Alta Mesa Resources, Inc., a NASDAQ-listed independent oil, gas, and NGL producer, gatherer, processor and transporter located in the eastern portion of the STACK in the Anadarko Basin. Hackett is also a Senior Advisor at Riverstone Holdings LLC, a large private energy investment firm.

Hackett is the retired Executive Chairman of the Board and former CEO of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, one of the world’s largest independent oil and natural gas exploration and production companies.

Before joining Anadarko, Hackett served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Devon Energy Corporation following its merger with Ocean Energy where he served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, itself a result of a merger in 1999 with Seagull Energy Corporation, where he was Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President. He joined Seagull from Duke Energy where he led its Energy Services Division as President. Prior to that, he was Executive Vice President of Pan Energy when the company merged with Duke Power to create Duke Energy. His energy experience includes positions in engineering, finance and marketing in E&P, midstream, power and oilfield services. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and National Petroleum Council, which he formerly chaired.

Hackett is a director of Fluor Corporation, Enterprise Holdings and Products Partners L.P., National Oilwell Varco — all Fortune 500 public companies. He also serves on the Boards of several Riverstone portfolio companies — Sierra Oil & Gas, Talen Energy and Crimson Resources. He is a Former Chairman of the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Hackett is a Board member (and former Chairman) of the Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University (where he has served as a faculty member for many years), and now serves on the Plan II and McCombs School of Business faculty at University of Texas (Austin).

Jay C. Hartzell is the 12th dean of the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin, one of the largest and most distinguished business schools in the country. He joined UT in 2001 after teaching at New York University’s Stern School of Business, and prior to his current role, he held several key administrative roles at the McCombs School. His most notable positions include his service as the senior associate dean for Academic Affairs, chair of the Finance Department, and executive director of the McCombs School’s Real Estate Finance and Investment Center.

Hartzell holds the Centennial Chair in Business Education Leadership and the Trammell Crow Regents Professorship in Business. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration and Economics (cum laude) from Trinity University and a Ph.D. in Finance from The University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on real estate finance, corporate finance and corporate governance. His articles have been published in the leading journals in the field, including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Real Estate Economics, and the Review of Financial Studies. Hartzell serves on the editorial board of Real Estate Economics, and he served as an associate editor of the Review of Financial Studies, and as a member of the board of directors of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association. In addition to his academic experience, Hartzell previously worked as a consultant with Hewitt Associates.
